Researching Tshuvah for Committee on Jewish Law and Standards (central halachic authority for Conservative/Masorti denomination) to make a distinction between sex and gender, in order to support marriage and traditional burial which are currently prohibited (or gender inappropriate) for ‘partially transitioned’ transsexuals and others who have not had Sex Re-assignment Surgery (SRS). With Rabbi Doctor Leonard Sharzer and Rabbi Stuart Kelman. In Dec 2009 I submitted questions for review. In early 2010 Dr Sharzer joined the project. Currently we are researching Talmudic and halachic precedent for answers. The first angle we are researching –in addition to pulling up all the usual miraculous gender-changers in Talmud—is a category in business law called, “looks like” that may help us make a (heretofore unheard of in Jewish law) distinction between sex and gender.
